Understanding Eating Disorders
What Are Eating Disorders
Eating disorders are serious and sometimes fatal illnesses that are associated with severe disturbances in eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions. Common eating disorders include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating, all of which have their own serious health effects.
Medical Definitions
Eating Disorder
An eating disorder, contrary to the common misconception, is not a lifestyle choice. It is a serious illness characterized by severe disturbances in eating behaviors and related thoughts and emotions, which can be very damaging to an individual’s physical and mental health. People suffering from eating disorders often become obsessed with food and body weight.
What are Some Different Eating Disorders?
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia nervosa, commonly referred to as “Anorexia,” is a condition where people avoid or severely restrict eating. They often become obsessed with their weight and see themselves as overweight even when dangerously underweight. Anorexia has an extremely high mortality rate compared to other mental disorders.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia nervosa, commonly referred to as “Bulimia,” is a condition where people have frequent episodes where they feel out of control and eat large amounts of food. These binges are followed by compensatory behaviors such as intentional vomiting, excessive use of laxatives, and fasting. Bulimia will often produce symptoms caused by purging, like sore throat, worn tooth enamel from stomach acid exposure, and severe dehydration.
Binge-Eating Disorder
Binge-eating disorder is the most common eating disorder in the United States. Similar to Bulimia, it is characterized by out-of-control eating episodes. However, these episodes are not followed by any compensatory behaviors and thus usually results in people becoming overweight and severely obese.
Statistics
Prevalence
Studies have shown that about 9% of the U.S. population will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives. Eating disorders are more common in females than males.
Consequences
Different eating disorders have different direct health consequences. However, it is believed that among psychiatric conditions, eating disorders have the second-highest mortality rate (behind opiate addiction). Many individuals with eating disorders are unhealthily underweight or overweight, which puts them at higher risk of developing a variety of health conditions.
